Inside a covered passage

Hotel Chopin is at 46 passage Jouffroy, at the far end of the passage, whose entrance is at 10 boulevard Montmartre. The passage is a covered passage opening on the Grands Boulevards and is itself a listed historic monument; so are the buildings at 10-12 boulevard Montmartre, protected in 1974 and 2012. The record covers the passage and those buildings, not the hotel’s own address, so we do not say the hotel is protected.

The hotel says it opened in 1846, the year the passage was built, and its history page records that the Musée Grévin moved into the passage in 1882. It is independent. Atout France, the French classification body, gives it two stars since 13 December 2022, for 35 rooms.

Rooms

The site sorts the rooms into economy, classic and family categories. The hotel states that no room faces the street and that most overlook the rooftops, a useful detail for a hotel next to a boulevard. We did not find a restaurant, bar, spa or gym, and the pages we read say nothing about a lift, air conditioning, accessible rooms or pets. At two stars, that is a short list of services; what the hotel offers is its address in the passage and its history since 1846.

Metro

The nearest stations are Grands Boulevards and Richelieu-Drouot, both on lines 8 and 9, about 300 and 350 metres away, four minutes each; Le Peletier, on line 7, is 350 metres, five minutes. For the quartier, measured from boulevard Montmartre, a theoretical metro journey is about 18 minutes to the Louvre, 21 to Notre-Dame and 29 to the Eiffel Tower, outside disruption.

Against its neighbours

Of the nine hotels in our list for Opéra and Grands Boulevards, it is the only two-star. Its 35 rooms compare with 23 at Hôtel Monsieur Helder and 30 at Hôtel Icône, both three-stars. Hôtel Panache, 90 metres away, is a four-star with 40 rooms, a restaurant and a bar. La Fantaisie, a five-star of 73 rooms, is 315 metres away. Our list of Opéra hotels shows them together.
