Paris suits a couple in several ways, and the data does not choose between them: ten of our thirteen areas are marked as recommended for couples, and only three are marked as possible. The question is therefore which kind of evening you want. This page sets out what each area offers, from the Marais to the Palaces, lists the hotels whose own sites present them as romantic, and says what the sources do not allow us to claim.
Areas for couples
The Opéra, Montparnasse and Bercy are the three areas marked as possible; La Défense, outside Paris, is not advised for couples because it is quiet outside office hours. The rest are recommended, for reasons that differ. The verdicts are deductions from the sources, not measurements.

Palaces and 5★ hotels
Atout France announced thirteen Palaces for Paris on 2 June 2026; the distinction is valid for three years. Three are new in 2026: Bvlgari Hotel Paris, Cheval Blanc Paris and Fouquet’s Paris. The ten others are Four Seasons George V, Hôtel de Crillon, the Plaza Athénée, La Réserve Paris, Le Bristol Paris, Le Meurice, Mandarin Oriental Lutetia Paris, Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris, Shangri-La Paris and The Peninsula Paris. The Ritz Paris and the Mandarin Oriental Paris on rue Saint-Honoré are 5★ hotels but are not on the 2026 Palace list.

The Champs-Élysées district holds the most. By the addresses in the Atout France register, eight of the thirteen Palaces are in the 8th arrondissement (Bvlgari, Four Seasons George V, Fouquet’s Paris, Crillon, La Réserve, Le Bristol, Plaza Athénée and Royal Monceau), two in the 1st (Le Meurice and Cheval Blanc Paris), one in the 6th (the Lutetia) and two in the 16th (Shangri-La and The Peninsula).
Small hotels with a romantic positioning
The list at the foot of this page gathers hotels from our database that describe themselves as romantic on their own sites, by area: the Maison Souquet, Le Narcisse Blanc, Hôtel Providence, Hôtel Chopin, La Maison Favart and the Terrass hotel, with the Hôtel La Comtesse added for its tower views. Their sizes range from 18 rooms (Hôtel Providence) to 92 (Terrass hotel). The Maison Souquet has 20 rooms and, according to its site, a ten-metre pool, and Hôtel La Comtesse says that every room sees the Eiffel Tower, head-on or from the side.

What two adults pay in tax
Paris charges its tourist tax per adult and per night, by category, from €2.60 for a 1★ to €15.93 for a Palace. The 2026 rates apply twice for a couple.
We publish no room prices, so the table is the only fixed cost we can state. A couple spending three nights in a 5★ adds €70.20 in tax; in a 4★ it adds €50.70.
The expression “cinq à sept”
Searches for “where to stay” often bring up the “5 to 7 rule”. In French, “cinq à sept” designates the activities between the end of the working day and the return home. The expression also evokes a discreet meeting between lovers and, more broadly, the aperitif at the start of the evening (Wikipedia, a secondary source). It is not a rule of any kind, and nothing in it affects the choice of a neighbourhood. Other meanings attributed to it on some sites, such as a rule about student rents, rest on a source we could not rely on and we do not repeat them.
Choosing between the areas
If you want the Louvre close, Louvre / Tuileries and Opéra come first, at 11.5 minutes by median transit time, ahead of Saint-Germain at 13. If you want the Eiffel Tower view, the area around rue Cler puts the tower 14 minutes away by the same measure. If you want the hill, Montmartre has stairs to match: 222 steps on rue Foyatier. The home page carries nine hotels for each area. For a first visit, see where to stay in Paris for the first time; for the full walking distances, the page on staying close to everything.
