Where to stay in Paris
Where to stay in Paris: thirteen neighbourhoods compared by travel time, hotel range and who they suit, with 117 classified hotels. Checked October 2026.
The short answer
For a first visit, stay in the Louvre / Tuileries district, around the Opéra, in the Marais or in Saint-Germain-des-Prés: in our reading of the data these four put the Louvre within 12 to 17 minutes and the main lines on the doorstep. The Latin Quarter and Montparnasse are marked for a first visit too, with the Louvre 24 and 23 minutes from the reference points of the table. Pick the neighbourhood by what you want from the evening and from the budget, then the hotel.
- First visit: Louvre / Tuileries, Opéra / Grands Boulevards, Le Marais, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and, farther from the Louvre, the Latin Quarter and Montparnasse.
- Couples: ten of the thirteen are marked as suited; only the Opéra, Montparnasse and Bercy are marked as possible. The couples page separates them.
- Families: the Eiffel Tower district and Bercy, for their parks and their space, and the Latin Quarter, for its free gardens.
- Small budget: Opéra / Grands Boulevards, Canal Saint-Martin, Montmartre, Bercy and Montparnasse; see the budget page.
- Nightlife: Bastille / Oberkampf and Pigalle / SoPi.
- Shopping: Louvre / Tuileries, Opéra, the Marais, Saint-Germain, the Champs-Élysées and Montparnasse, where shops may open on Sundays.
- Not recommended for a tourist stay: La Défense, which lies outside Paris (details below).
These verdicts are our deductions from the sources, not measurements. The table and the sections below give the figures behind each one.
The thirteen neighbourhoods compared
Paris has twenty arrondissements, numbered in a spiral from the 1st, on the Right Bank, which is why many visitors compare areas by number. We compare thirteen areas as visitors use them. Their limits are our editorial choice, not an official map, and each one keeps the colour of its arrondissement on the map above.

Travel times are medians of four departures between 10:00 and 10:15 on Tuesday 13 October 2026, from the IDFM timetable (GTFS), walking included, and from one reference point per neighbourhood: Place du Marché Saint-Honoré 75001; Place de l’Opéra 75009; Place des Vosges 75004; Place Saint-Germain des Prés 75006; Place de la Sorbonne 75005; Place Raoul Dautry 75015; Rue Cler 75007; Avenue George V 75008; 102 Quai de Jemmapes 75010; Place de la Bastille 75011; Place des Abbesses 75018; Place Pigalle 75009; Cour Saint-Émilion 75012. They are theoretical times without disruption, security queues or ticket-office waits, and they take into account two works closures: line 4 does not stop at Saint-Michel until 19 December 2026, and line 8 does not stop at République until April 2027 (paris.fr, read on 4 October 2026). The hotel counts come from the Atout France register of classified hotels, exported on 4 October 2026. The Marais count covers the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, the Latin Quarter count the 5th, and the Montparnasse count the whole of the 14th and 15th.
For a street-level view of the arrondissements, see the map of the arrondissements and districts, and for a choice by arrondissement number, the arrondissement guide. If your priority is walking everywhere, read the page on staying close to everything.
Neighbourhood by neighbourhood
Each neighbourhood below lists nine hotels from our database: three at the upper end, three in the middle and three at a smaller budget. The tiers follow the Atout France star classification and the size of the category in the area, so a few 4★ hotels sit in the upper tier in neighbourhoods that have one 5★ or none at all. There is no price in these lists: no official source publishes average hotel prices by area, and room rates change daily. The metro line is the nearest station, with the walking time computed from the hotel’s address.
Louvre / Tuileries
This is the 1st arrondissement west of Les Halles: the Louvre, the Tuileries and the Palais-Royal are all on foot, and the Louvre is about 12 minutes from our reference point. Lines 1, 7 and 14 serve it; line 14 runs direct to Orly, and the RER B for Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle is a short ride away at Châtelet-Les Halles. Seventeen of its 71 classified hotels are 5★, including two of the 2026 Palaces, and only 21 are rated 1★ to 3★. Foreign-office advice names the Louvre and the Tuileries among the places where pickpockets work.

Opéra / Grands Boulevards
A transport hub: metro lines 3, 7, 8 and 9, the RER A at Auber, the RER E at Haussmann-Saint-Lazare, and line 14 at the edge, at Madeleine, Pyramides and Saint-Lazare. The Palais Garnier, the department stores and the covered passages are on foot, and the Louvre is 12 minutes away. The zone counts 139 classified hotels, mostly 4★ (65) and 3★ (56): 121 hotels at 3★ or 4★, the second-largest middle range of the thirteen, after Montparnasse (175). There is no RER B in the zone: Roissy needs a change, and the RoissyBus that ended at Opéra was withdrawn on 1 March 2026.

Le Marais
Paris Centre, with the Louvre 17 minutes away and Notre-Dame 19, measured from place des Vosges. Shops are allowed to open on Sundays in the Marais tourist zone, the rue des Rosiers is pedestrian that day, and the Île Saint-Louis is quiet in the evening. The Eiffel Tower is the long trip, about 38 minutes. The Centre Pompidou is closed until 2030, and works around Notre-Dame keep the square de l’Île-de-France shut until mid-2027. The nine hotels below have no page on this site; our sister guide, Hotels Marais Paris, covers the district in depth.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés
The central Left Bank: the Louvre is 13 minutes away and Notre-Dame 12, and the Musée d’Orsay is reached along the Seine. Line 4 runs straight to Châtelet (for line 14 to Orly) and to Gare du Nord (for the RER B to Roissy); it does not stop at Saint-Michel until 19 December 2026, and the Eiffel Tower is 30 minutes away by a walk to the Musée d’Orsay and the RER C. The 6th arrondissement is described as first a wealthy residential district, home to the Senate, the Luxembourg garden and the Odéon theatre. The sources call the district the most expensive in Paris: only 8 of the 86 classified hotels in the core zone are 1★ or 2★, and no source describes a bar scene beyond the big cafés.

Latin Quarter
The 5th arrondissement alone, from the Seine to rue Monge and boulevard de Port-Royal. Boulevard Saint-Michel separates it from the 6th, so Odéon and the Luxembourg garden are counted with Saint-Germain-des-Prés here. Notre-Dame is 12 minutes on foot from place de la Sorbonne (949 m) and the Louvre 24 on foot (1,911 m); from rue Mouffetard, in the south, line 7 reaches the Louvre in 19 minutes. Lines 7 and 10 serve the district, and the RER B stops at Luxembourg and Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, with a direct train to Roissy; line 4 does not stop at Saint-Michel until 19 December 2026. The Eiffel Tower is the long trip: 31 minutes from the Sorbonne by the RER C, 38 from rue Mouffetard. The 5th counts 82 classified hotels but only one 5★, Maison Colbert, so the upper range is completed by two 4★ with a pool and a spa, Monte Cristo and Grand Cœur Latin; the Monte Cristo site still showed a temporary closure notice for its pool on 4 October 2026. None of the twelve international tourist zones lies in the 5th, so there is no zone-wide Sunday opening, and no source describes a district of night bars: the evening is jazz in rue de la Huchette, theatres, cinemas and restaurants. The foreign-office warnings about the RER B concern the line, not the district. Our sister guide, Latin Quarter Hotels, covers the district in depth; the nine hotels below have no page on this site. To weigh the district against the Marais, see Le Marais vs Latin Quarter.

Montparnasse
Around the Gare Montparnasse, in the south of the 6th, the north of the 14th and the south-east of the 15th. The area is not an administrative district, which is why the selection straddles three arrondissements. The Montparnasse-Bienvenüe station has four metro lines (4, 6, 12 and 13) and the Transilien line N; from place Raoul Dautry, the Eiffel Tower is 23 minutes away on line 6, direct to Bir-Hakeim, Notre-Dame 21 on line 4, and the Louvre 23 with a change to line 1. The stock is the largest in the table: 206 classified hotels in the 14th and 15th, which are counted whole here, and 31 of them rated 1★ or 2★. None is a 5★, so the three upper-range hotels are 4★ (Drawing House, Le Six and Sainte-Beuve). The international tourist zone of Rennes - Saint-Sulpice covers rue de Rennes up to boulevard du Montparnasse and the station surroundings, where shops may open on Sundays. There is no RER B at Montparnasse: Roissy takes 54 to 63.5 minutes with a change at Châtelet-Les Halles or Denfert-Rochereau. The observatory of the Tour Montparnasse has been closed since 31 March 2026 for a renovation of several years, and line 13 is closed until noon on several Sundays until 13 December 2026. The evening is the brasseries and the theatres of rue de la Gaîté; one hotel mentions nightlife, but no independent source describes a district of bars. The foreign-office warnings about big stations and the metro apply to the Gare Montparnasse as to any other; none names the district.

Eiffel Tower
The tower is 14 minutes from our reference point on rue Cler, which is pedestrian and holds the district’s food shops. This is a residential area with the Champ-de-Mars and the Invalides esplanade, and the Branly, Invalides and Rodin museums on foot. The cost is distance: the Louvre is 21 minutes and Notre-Dame 26. No line runs direct to either airport, and the foreign-office pages cited here report thefts around the tower and the Trocadéro. Evening life is mostly restaurants and brasseries.

Champs-Élysées / Golden Triangle
The 8th arrondissement has 154 classified hotels, 45 of them 5★, and eight of the thirteen 2026 Palaces. Line 1 and the RER A meet at Charles-de-Gaulle-Étoile, and line 14 leaves from Madeleine and Saint-Lazare for Orly. Evenings are shows rather than neighbourhood bars: the Crazy Horse, the Lido, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Budget hotels are almost absent from the core, the district is more offices and luxury than homes, and big events close the avenue on some days, among them 14 July and 31 December.

Canal Saint-Martin
The canal banks are closed to cars on Sundays and public holidays, and the district has many 2★ and 3★ hotels: 27 of 112 classified are 1★ or 2★, the second-highest count among the thirteen, after Montparnasse (31). République (lines 3, 5, 9 and 11; line 8 does not stop there until April 2027), Gare du Nord and Magenta connect it to the centre, but no major monument is on foot: the Louvre is 26 minutes away, Notre-Dame 25. Wikipedia mentions night-time noise along the water, and the foreign-office warning about pickpockets in the big stations covers the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l’Est nearby.

Bastille / Oberkampf
Line 1 runs from Bastille to the Louvre, the Concorde and the Champs-Élysées without a change, and the Marais is on foot. According to Wikipedia, rue de Lappe and rue Oberkampf hold some of the densest bar and restaurant strips in Paris, and the Opéra Bastille, the Cirque d’Hiver, the Bataclan and the Atelier des Lumières are nearby. Evening noise is possible near those streets, no official street-level noise data was found, and few major monuments are within walking distance. Two 5★ hotels have a pool.

Montmartre
Sacré-Cœur, the Bateau-Lavoir and the Moulin de la Galette give the hill a village feel, and the Louvre is 23 minutes away. The slope is part of the stay: 222 steps on rue Foyatier, a 36 m climb served by the funicular, and Abbesses station 36 m underground. There is no RER station in the district, and only one 5★ hotel in the whole 18th arrondissement. The south foot of the hill, around Pigalle, is cited by the Japanese foreign ministry for night-time crime, so judge the exact street.

Pigalle / SoPi
South Pigalle sits between the Opéra and Montmartre, with four metro lines (2, 7, 12, 13) and 88 classified hotels, three of them 5★. Rue des Martyrs is one of the 9th arrondissement’s main shopping streets, and the Saint-Georges area holds theatres and two museums, the Musée de la Vie romantique and the Musée Gustave Moreau. Around place Pigalle and the boulevards, the Japanese foreign ministry reports touts and overcharging bars, and the nights are noisy. Shops are mostly shut on Sundays, and Roissy or Orly needs a change.

Bercy / Gare de Lyon
Line 14 runs direct to Orly from Gare de Lyon, Bercy and Cour Saint-Émilion, and the RER A goes straight to Disneyland. The Parc de Bercy, the Coulée verte and the Seine banks are close, and Bercy Village’s restaurants open late. Against that, the 12th arrondissement has no 5★ hotel, the Louvre is 19 minutes away and the Eiffel Tower 36, and Gare de Lyon is a station where the foreign office warns of pickpockets. Evening life depends on Bercy Village and on the nights of events at the Accor Arena.

Where not to stay
We name a place only when an official source or the press does. An absence of warning is not proof of safety, and a warning is not a ban on staying nearby.
- La Défense. It is a business district outside Paris, in Puteaux, Courbevoie, Nanterre and La Garenne-Colombes, described as quiet once the office workers have left. From the forecourt, the timetable gives 27 minutes to the Louvre, 26 to Notre-Dame and 32 to the Eiffel Tower, and no line runs direct to Roissy or Orly. It suits a concert at the arena or a business trip, which is why we rate it unsuitable for a first visit, a family or a couple. This verdict is our deduction.
- Pigalle at night. The Japanese foreign ministry classes the pleasure districts, “in particular the Pigalle sector”, among high-crime areas, with touts and bars that overcharge. The advice is about place and hour: the streets around place Pigalle and the boulevard de Clichy after dark.
- Gare du Nord and the RER B. The British Foreign Office reports several serious assaults on the RER B (Roissy, Orly, Gare du Nord) and pickpockets in the big stations. We found no official page that names the station district as an area to avoid in the evening.
- Stalingrad, La Chapelle and the porte de la Chapelle. Wikipedia describes the place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad as a site of crack trafficking and use since the 1990s, with the scenes since moved to the porte de la Chapelle. The “crack hill” lies about 1.7 km as the crow flies from the Sacré-Cœur, outside Montmartre. This is a single, secondary source.
- The busiest sights. The Eiffel Tower, the Trocadéro, the Louvre, the Tuileries and the Champs-Élysées are cited for pickpockets, along with the metro and the RER. They are not places to avoid for a hotel, only places to keep a bag closed.
On Châtelet-Les Halles in the evening, no source we could read singles out the area, so we publish no warning. The only mention found is a historical one about the Forum des Halles before its renovation, which began in 2002.
For all of Paris, the interior ministry’s statistics service (SSMSI) counts 94,924 victims of theft without violence in 2025, 4.2% fewer than in 2024 and 41.5% fewer than in 2019, and 7,268 violent thefts without a weapon, against 19,141 in 2019. These are recorded offences per resident population: they are not a measure of the risk to a visitor. The figures by arrondissement, with the same caution, are on the page about the safest areas to stay; the longer version of this section is areas to avoid in Paris.
First stay, with children, on a small budget
A first stay
Six neighbourhoods are marked for a first visit. The first four share one advantage: the Louvre, Notre-Dame or the Seine is within walking distance or one metro line. The Latin Quarter and Montparnasse are marked too but sit farther from the Louvre, which is 24 minutes on foot from place de la Sorbonne and 23 minutes from place Raoul Dautry with a change. Of the six, the Marais is the longest trip to the Eiffel Tower (38 minutes from place des Vosges) and Montparnasse the shortest (23 minutes, on line 6 direct to Bir-Hakeim), ahead of the Opéra (26). Plan the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre as metro trips from almost anywhere: no neighbourhood allows everything on foot. The page on where to stay in Paris for the first time builds the choice around an itinerary.
With children
The three neighbourhoods marked as recommended for families are the Eiffel Tower district, which has the Champ-de-Mars (24.3 ha, entirely open), Bercy, with the Parc de Bercy, Bercy Village on foot and a Pullman with rooms for four and a pool, and the Latin Quarter, where the Jardin des Plantes and the Luxembourg garden on its western edge are free and Les Dames du Panthéon and Hôtel du Brésil list family rooms. Children do not pay the Paris tourist tax: the scale applies per adult and per night. Montmartre is harder with a pushchair, because of the stairs and the slope. See where to stay in Paris with family.
On a small budget
The hotel counts show where cheap rooms exist: Montparnasse (31 hotels rated 1★ or 2★), Canal Saint-Martin (27), Bastille / Oberkampf (17), Montmartre (12), Bercy (11) and the Latin Quarter (10), against 4 in Louvre / Tuileries and 5 in the Champs-Élysées. Even the lowest category pays the tourist tax: €2.60 per adult per night in a 1★, €3.25 in a 2★ and €5.53 in a 3★, from 1 January 2026. We publish no average price. The page on places to stay in Paris on a budget goes into the detail.
Getting in from the airports in 2026
- Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, by bus. The RoissyBus from the Opéra was withdrawn on 1 March 2026 and replaced by the express line 9517, Argenteuil – Saint-Denis Pleyel – Roissypôle, running 5:10 to 00:30 every day. It does not reach central Paris: you change at Saint-Denis Pleyel for metro lines 13 and 14. Île-de-France Mobilités explained the withdrawal by a 40% fall in ridership since 2023 and by congestion on the A1 motorway.
- Roissy, by train. The RER B is the direct route: in the timetable of 13 October 2026, Terminal 2 to Gare du Nord took a median of 35 minutes and to Châtelet-Les Halles 39, depending on whether the train is fast or stopping.
- CDG Express. The direct train between Gare de l’Est and Roissy, 20 minutes with a train every 15 minutes from 5:00 to midnight and a €25 single fare, is announced for 28 March 2027. It is not running in 2026.
- Orly. Line 14 runs direct to Orly from Châtelet and Gare de Lyon, in 24 to 25 and 21 to 22 minutes. The OrlyBus stopped on 3 March 2025.
- Fares. The Paris Region – Airports ticket costs €14 (€7 reduced) in 2026 and is valid on the RER B, line 14 and Orlyval; the €2.55 metro ticket is not valid to the airports. Card payment at the line 14 exit gates in Orly has been possible since 30 June 2026, at €14.80, connections not included.
- Taxi. Flat fares in 2026, in both directions: Roissy €56 to the Right Bank and €65 to the Left Bank; Orly €45 to the Right Bank and €36 to the Left Bank. The only supplement is €5.50 from the fifth passenger. The rule depends on the bank, not on the arrondissement.
What this means for the choice: Louvre / Tuileries, the Champs-Élysées and Bercy reach Orly on line 14; Louvre / Tuileries and Canal Saint-Martin reach Roissy on the RER B at Châtelet-Les Halles and Gare du Nord; Saint-Germain-des-Prés reaches it by line 4 to Châtelet-Les Halles and the RER B, in a median of 50.5 minutes to Terminal 1 and 56.5 to Terminal 2 from place Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Line 4 does not stop at Saint-Michel until 19 December 2026, so from Saint-Germain-des-Prés the RER B is reached at Châtelet-Les Halles; the RER B and C at Saint-Michel Notre-Dame are not among the closures listed by paris.fr. Line 8 does not stop at République until April 2027 (paris.fr, read on 4 October 2026). The Latin Quarter reaches Roissy on the RER B at Saint-Michel Notre-Dame and Luxembourg, in a median of 50.5 minutes to terminal 1 and 56.5 to terminal 2 from place de la Sorbonne, and Orly in 41 minutes by line 14 and the RER C. Montparnasse has no RER B: Roissy takes 54 to 63.5 minutes with a change, and Orly 38 to 38.5. In the Eiffel Tower district no line goes direct to either airport.
Questions
What is the best area of Paris to stay in?
There is no single answer, because the thirteen areas trade distance against price and evening life. For a first visit, our data marks the Louvre / Tuileries district, the Opéra, the Marais, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Latin Quarter and Montparnasse as recommended. For a longer stay or a return visit, the Canal Saint-Martin and Bastille / Oberkampf areas put you in lived-in districts, with a metro line to the centre.
What is the 5 to 7 rule in Paris?
“Cinq à sept” (5 to 7) is a French expression for the hours between the end of the working day and the return home. It also evokes a discreet meeting between lovers and, more broadly, the early-evening aperitif, according to Wikipedia. It is neither a legal rule nor advice about where to sleep, so it plays no part in this guide’s choice of neighbourhood.
What are the best hotels in Paris for first-time visitors?
We give no ranking or rating of hotels. What the data allows is to choose the neighbourhood first, then the tier. In the neighbourhoods marked for a first visit, examples from our lists are Le Meurice and Cheval Blanc Paris (5★, Louvre / Tuileries), Hôtel Brighton (4★, Louvre / Tuileries), Hôtel de l’Abbaye (4★, Saint-Germain), Maison Colbert Meliá Collection (5★, Latin Quarter), Mercure Paris Centre Gare Montparnasse (4★, Montparnasse) and Hôtel Montpensier (2★, Louvre / Tuileries). Each hotel page gives its Atout France classification, its date and its metro stations.
Where should I stay in Paris for two days?
For two days, minimise travel: the Louvre / Tuileries district, Saint-Germain-des-Prés or the Marais put the Louvre 12 to 17 minutes away and Notre-Dame 12 to 19. Keep the Eiffel Tower for one metro trip.
Is it better to book a hotel or a rental apartment?
The rules for tourist rentals are strict in Paris: a main residence may be let for at most 90 days a year, an advertisement must show a registration number, and fines reach €10,000 for exceeding the 90 days and €5,000 for a missing registration number (city of Paris, page updated on 25 March 2026). A classified hotel appears in the Atout France register, which is the source of every star rating in this guide.
Which area should I avoid in Paris?
La Défense is the only area we advise against for a tourist stay, because it lies outside Paris and is quiet after office hours. Elsewhere we give vigilance points by place and hour rather than banned districts; see areas to avoid in Paris.
How this guide was compiled
The guide covers thirteen neighbourhoods and one hundred and seventeen classified hotels, each checked against its own website and against the Atout France register of 4 October 2026. Stars are only those of the register, with their date. We publish no price, no rating and no customer review, and nothing on these pages is written from a stay. The author line links to the method page, which lists the sources and the dates of each check.
