Where to Stay in Paris

A rue de Charonne address with an artistic brief

Hôtel Exquis is at 71 rue de Charonne, in the 11th arrondissement, about 450 m from Charonne station and 800 m from place de la Bastille. We list it in our Bastille hotel guide. The hotel opened in September 2015 and is independent. Atout France gave it three stars on 21 February 2024, for 42 rooms.

Charonne (line 9) takes six minutes on foot, Ledru-Rollin (line 8) and Voltaire (line 9) eight.

What the hotel is about

The identity of the house is its décor. The hotel presents a surrealist scheme by Julie Gauthron, in which each room has its own collective artwork made on the “exquisite corpse” principle. On the pages we read, we found a breakfast and a decoration page, and nothing on air conditioning, accessibility, pets or a bar. If any of these matter to your stay, ask before booking; we do not assume them.

Among the three-star hotels of the 11th

The 11th arrondissement counts 37 classified three-star hotels and 12 two-star; this list of nine holds three three-stars. Hôtel Daval has 23 rooms and Hôtel HOR Les Lumières 41, each listing air conditioning. Exquis, at 42 rooms, is the largest of the three, and the one whose page rests on an artist’s work rather than on listed comforts. Four-star hotels of the list such as Les Deux Girafes, with its patio, 1.2 km away, are described on their page.

Around rue de Charonne

Place de la Bastille, the reference point, is 760 m from the hotel. From there the median metro journey is 17 minutes to the Louvre and 19 to Notre-Dame, both on line 1, and 36.5 to the Eiffel Tower, on line 1 then line 9 with a change at Franklin D. Roosevelt. Wikipedia describes rue de Lappe as well known for its nightlife; the density of bars there and on rue Oberkampf is documented but not measured for noise. The Atelier des Lumières is among the cultural venues of the quartier, and the Opéra Bastille stands just across the border, in the 12th. The hotels of the 11th arrondissement put Exquis beside the rest.
