How we chose these hotels
The centre point of this list is the Palais Garnier, at its Wikidata coordinates. We measured, from each hotel’s own coordinates, the straight-line distance to it and kept the hotels within 600 m. The selection took first the five hotels read by hand, even the farther ones (Favart at 435 m, Icône at 544 m), then rotated through the categories from five stars to one, the closest first in each, up to twenty candidates. Thirteen of the twenty have a file and all thirteen are described, shown with the hand-checked hotels first, then by stars, then by distance. Seven candidates have no file and cannot be described: Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme (five stars), Hôtel Indigo Paris Opéra (four), 1Opéra, Prince Albert Opéra, Volney Opéra and Caumartin Opéra (three) and Louvain (one).

Nineteen other hotels of the circle have a file but fall outside the twenty, the nearest at 262 m and the farthest at 584 m; among them are four-star Astra Opéra (262 m), Maison Athénée (271 m), Dress Code (313 m), Le Basile (338 m), France d’Antin Opéra (339 m) and Golden Tulip Opéra de Noailles (340 m), all closer than Favart, Hana and Icône. They are left out by the rule, not by a verdict on quality. The thirteen listed include five read by hand on the hotel’s website; the other eight come from automatic reading, so we state for them only the category, rooms, address, metro and what the hotel says about itself. No hotel pays to appear, and we show no rates.
Where to stay around the Opéra, and for whom
The first cluster is on rue du Helder and rue Scribe, two streets within about 250 m of the Palais Garnier: the InterContinental, the Sofitel, Albar Vendôme, Chouchou, The Chess Hotel and Monsieur Helder. The second is to the east, on rue de Marivaux and rue d’Amboise, near the Opéra-Comique: Favart and Icône. The third, rue de la Paix and rue du 4 Septembre, has Westminster and Hana. Kimpton (boulevard des Capucines), Saint-Pétersbourg (rue de Caumartin) and Opéra d’Antin (rue de Provence) stand on their own to the north and north-west.

The Opéra area is a transport junction: RER A at Auber, RER E at Haussmann-Saint-Lazare, lines 3, 7, 8 and 9, and line 14 at its edge. Its drawbacks are few and concrete: no RER B, so Charles de Gaulle needs a change, and, according to our data, an evening built around shows (opera, music-hall, theatres, cinema) rather than bars.
For the same hotels seen from the other side of boulevard Haussmann, see the 9th arrondissement list. For hotels around the Louvre and Châtelet, the central Paris list uses Châtelet as its centre and takes in Favart and Icône too.
