Where they sit
“Canal Saint-Martin” is a name in use, not an official perimeter. We take the 10th arrondissement around the open-air canal (quai de Valmy and quai de Jemmapes), from place de la République in the south to the Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est in the north-west. The canal is 4.55 km long, opened in 1825, with nine locks, and has been a registered monument since 23 February 1993. Near the water, each hotel has one of these metro stops as its nearest:

Which part for whom
Couples: walks along the canal, whose banks are closed to cars on Sundays and public holidays from 10 am to 8 pm between April and September (6 pm from October to March); our sheet names Providence, Citizen and Garbo for them.
A smaller budget: 54 three-star and 19 two-star hotels are classified in the area we retained.
Families: pedestrian banks on Sundays and family rooms in several hotels, against a station environment to the north and lively evenings by the water.
First visit: possible, but there is no major monument here. Median metro times from the canal bank are 25.5 minutes to the Louvre, 25 to Notre-Dame and 41 to the Eiffel Tower, outside disruption; République (lines 3, 5, 9 and 11, and line 8, which does not stop there from 22 July 2026 to April 2027) and the Gare du Nord connect the area quickly.
Shopping: the 10th has no Sunday-trading zone, so Sunday opening of shops is not guaranteed.
Within a few streets of the quais: Le Citizen Hôtel is the only classified hotel on the quay itself, Hôtel Àmoi sits on rue du Château-d'Eau next to Jacques Bonsergent station (line 5), and Le Grand Quartier is three minutes from Château d'Eau (line 4). The nearest station and the straight-line distance to the canal are given for each hotel.
Is the Canal Saint-Martin area safe?
Official SSMSI figures do cover the 10th. In 2025 it recorded 13.6 physical assaults outside the family and 9.7 violent thefts without a weapon per 1,000 residents (Paris: 5.3 and 3.5), and 7,692 thefts without violence against persons, or 91.7 per 1,000 residents (Paris: 45.1). These rates are based on residents and do not count visitors. The British authorities warn about pickpockets in the metro, on RER lines and in big stations, and about serious assaults on RER B, which serves the Gare du Nord. Place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad, in the 19th at the north end of the canal, has been described since the 1990s as a place of crack dealing and use.
Are the quays closed to cars?
On Sundays and public holidays, under the “Paris respire” scheme: from 10 am to 8 pm between April and September, and from 10 am to 6 pm between October and March.
Is the canal a good base for a first stay in Paris?
It suits a second stay better, according to our data: there is no major monument on its banks, but République and the Gare du Nord link it quickly to the centre.
Are there hotels near both the canal and the Gare du Nord?
