How we chose these hotels
Our rule is administrative: every hotel on the page has a Paris 75006 postcode in its file. We leave out the seven 75006 hotels that belong to our Latin Quarter guide, on the Odéon and Saint-Michel fringe, which leaves 37 hotels in our database. We kept fifteen of them: the seven checked by hand, then eight others chosen to span two to five stars. It is a selection, not the fifteen nearest to the square: Au Manoir (88 m), Fougère (103 m), Madison (126 m), Des Deux Continents and La Villa Saint-Germain-des-Prés (147 m) are all nearer than every hotel below except Bel Ami. We ranked those listed by category, five stars first, then by distance to place Saint-Germain-des-Prés. That reference point is the one our travel-time calculations use; every distance is a straight line from the hotel’s own coordinates, between 72 m (Bel Ami) and 1,328 m (Atelier Vavin).

Seven of the fifteen were checked by hand against the hotel’s website: Lutetia, L’Hôtel, L’Abbaye, Récamier, Marronniers, Michelet Odéon and La Louisiane. The other eight come from automatic reading; for them we state only the category, rooms, address, metro and what the hotel says about itself, attributed. No rates are shown.
Who the 6th suits
Our neighbourhood sheet gives Saint-Germain-des-Prés three recommended profiles: the first visit, the couple and the shopper. It lists its strengths as walking access to the Louvre and Orsay by the Seine, line 4, and a dense heritage that includes the churches of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Saint-Sulpice, the Odéon, the Institut and the Luxembourg garden.

Its weaknesses are also on record: the highest prices in Paris, no direct rail line to Charles de Gaulle, and little nightlife beyond the big cafés. The sheet advises against the area on a tight budget. The central Paris list and the 1st arrondissement list cover the other side of the Seine, where the Louvre is also within reach, and the arrondissement comparison places the 6th among the rest.
