Where to Stay in Paris

No source we read ranks Bercy by safety, and no official page we found tells visitors to avoid it. What exists is a statistics base from the interior ministry’s service (SSMSI) with the offences recorded in each arrondissement, and the advice of foreign ministries. Bercy lies in the 12th arrondissement, and the base does not go below that level: the figures below are for the whole arrondissement, not for Bercy alone, and they are counts of recorded offences, not an index of danger.

What the 2025 figures show

The table gives the 2025 counts for the 12th and for Paris as a whole, with the rate per 1,000 residents in brackets, calculated on the resident population (2023 census).

Category 12th arrondissement Paris
Physical violence outside the family 6.6 (909) 5.3 (11,095)
Violent theft without a weapon 3.8 (522) 3.5 (7,268)
Theft without violence against persons 50.1 (6,916) 45.1 (94,924)
Home burglary 3.5 (311) 5.1 (7,072)

Read the table with its limits. The rate is divided by residents, not by everyone present, so an arrondissement that receives commuters, travellers and event crowds reads higher than what its residents live with. The 12th includes Gare de Lyon, the second busiest station in Paris by traffic (109.9 million travellers in 2018, according to Wikipedia), and the Accor Arena, with up to 20,300 seats. Across the whole city the base counts 94,924 victims of theft without violence in 2025, a fall of 4.2% on 2024 and of 41.5% on 2019. We do not conclude from these numbers that the 12th is dangerous or safe; the full table for every arrondissement is on our page on the safest area to stay in Paris.

What foreign ministries say

  • Foreign Office (United Kingdom), page dated 11 August 2026. Pickpockets work in the metro, the RER and the big mainline stations, sometimes as a group in which one person distracts and another steals. The Foreign Office also reports serious assaults on RER line D, which it associates with the Stade de France; the RER D also serves Gare de Lyon.
  • Japan and South Korea. Japan’s sheet names the metro and RER, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Champs-Élysées and the Trocadéro; South Korea warns of very many pickpockets at tourist sites and in metro stations. None of the sources we read names Bercy or Gare de Lyon as an area to avoid.

The message concerns places and gestures, not a district to sleep in. For the places that sources do single out, see areas to avoid in Paris.

What Bercy is

The Bercy district was rebuilt from the 1980s around large venues: the Palais omnisports in 1984 and the Ministry of the Economy and Finance in 1990. Bercy Village stands on the former wine warehouses and runs along a paved street, with a cinema and restaurants open until 2 am. The Parc de Bercy was laid out between 1993 and 1997. The Coulée verte René-Dumont, a 4.7 km walk on a former railway line, starts at the Viaduc des Arts. Our reading of the sources is that the district is marked by offices and large venues, with life concentrated around Bercy Village and event evenings. There are no five-star hotels in the 12th: the four hotels below are four stars and three stars. For the whole district see Bercy hotels, and for the station hotels near Gare de Lyon.

How we chose

Our file holds nine hotels for the Bercy area. We show four of them, one for each part: Bercy Village (Pullman), the Bercy station (Claret), the Gare de Lyon side (Sleeping Belle) and the northern edge, in Picpus (Le 209). Of the other five, Parisianer is on the Bercy hotels list, Maison Traversière, Riesner and Bel Oranger are on the Gare de Lyon list, and La Petite Rosa is on neither. We did not rank them, and no prices are published. The figures are those of the SSMSI edition of July 2026, 2025 data, as read on 4 October 2026.

Which hotel area for whom

  • Families. Bercy Village is pedestrian, the park is close, and Pullman and Le 209 list family or communicating rooms.
  • Airport on line 14. Pullman at Cour Saint-Émilion and Claret at Bercy are on line 14, which runs direct to Orly; aboard, the ride from Gare de Lyon takes 21 to 22 minutes.
  • Early train. Sleeping Belle stands beside the Gare de Lyon clock tower.
  • Evenings out. Bercy Village has restaurants open until 2 am. Our sheet does not describe the area as a bar district; Bastille lies at the northern tip of the Quinze-Vingts quarter.
