The short answer is that Bastille suits people who want an evening district at their door and a direct line to the centre. It does not suit those who want the monuments on foot. Our neighbourhood sheet, which covers Bastille and Oberkampf together, is the source of every verdict below.
What counts as Bastille
The name has no official boundary. We take the 11th arrondissement from place de la Bastille to place de la République, with rue de Lappe and rue de la Roquette, rue Oberkampf and rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud, and the faubourg Saint-Antoine on the 11th side. Place de la Bastille itself is shared between the 4th, 11th and 12th: the July Column stands in the 4th and the Opéra Bastille in the 12th, so neither counts as part of the 11th in our data.

Verdicts by profile
- Couples: recommended, for boutique hotels, restaurants, the Opéra Bastille and the Marais within walking distance.
- Nightlife: recommended, with rue de Lappe and rue Oberkampf as two documented hubs.
- First visit: possible, because it lies outside the historic centre, but line 1 runs to the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées without a change.
- Families: possible, with two five-stars that have a pool and family rooms, Maison Bréguet and the Boutet, but lively streets at night.
- Budget: possible, with 37 three-stars and 12 two-stars among the 72 hotels classified in the 11th, fewer than in the 10th.
- Shopping: possible, since the 11th has no tourist zone for Sunday opening.
Getting around
From place de la Bastille the line 1 trip to the Louvre takes 17 minutes by our timetable calculation, and Notre-Dame 19. From rue Oberkampf, the same trips take 26.5 and 25 minutes, with changes. The Eiffel Tower is 36.5 minutes from Bastille and 41.5 from Oberkampf. Orly is 37 minutes from Bastille by line 1 and line 14; Charles de Gaulle is 52.5 to 57.5 minutes by line 5 and the RER B. Flat taxi fares for 2026 are €56 to Charles de Gaulle and €45 to Orly. Line 8 has not stopped at République since 22 July 2026 and will not until April 2027, according to paris.fr, which matters for the northern end of the area; lines 3, 5, 9 and 11 still serve it.

The hotel mix
Of the 72 classified hotels in the four administrative districts of the 11th, our file counts 5 one-stars, 12 two-stars, 37 three-stars, 16 four-stars and 2 five-stars. The two five-stars, Maison Bréguet and the Boutet, are both in our list below. The 11th is on the right bank, with the Louvre and Marais.

Nine hotels from our sheet
They are the nine hotels of the area that we read by hand on their own sites, and they run from the square to Oberkampf. The 11th has twenty-one other classified hotels with a fiche read by machine only. The three nearest the square are among them: Hôtel Oh la la (three stars, 40 m), Hôtel Bastille (two stars, 78 m) and Le Petit Beaumarchais (four stars, 151 m); the Bastille hotel list describes Oh la la and Le Petit Beaumarchais. Distances to the nearest metro station come from the hotel files, and the notes say only what the file confirms or what the hotel says of itself.
Where to go next
The Bastille hotel list, linked above, ranks hotels by distance to the square. For a safety reading of the area, see the Bastille safety page; for the evening side, the nightlife page; and the 11th arrondissement list for the full range.
